A member asked:

Could breath holding increase blood pressure or decrease blood pressure and why?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not certain: Great question. My thought is that it would increase BP because hyperventilation causes low co2 ; is a vasodilator leading to fainting. With breath holding, co2 rises and, i assume, would have the opposite effect-vasoconstriction. In addition, there is discomfort with prolonged breath holding and discomfort always causes BP to rise. (however, if breathing stops permanently, BP will surely fall).
