Diphtheria: Complications can include inflammation of the heart, heart valve infection, heart rhythm disturbances, and congestive heart failure, and also neurological including muscle paralysis, muscle weakness, and vision problems. These muscles can influence ability to swallow and potentially to breathe. You should be seen and re-evaluated, both by a cardiologist and an ENT doctor. Good luck.
