No, this not normal: You may have sleep apnea with what are called gasping arousals. This is where you temporarily stop breathing in your sleep and then when your oxygen drops enough where brain sends the rest of your body a message to wake up gasping for air. About 20% of people with depression have sleep apnea. It is certainly not unheard of in your age group. 20% of people with sleep apnea have depression with or without anxiety.
