Endocarditis: Sbe stands for subacute bacterial endocarditis. It can occur in patients who have a very leaky valve in the heart (mitral valve) causing a back flow (called regurgitation) across the valve. During a dental cleaning, bacteria from the mouth may travel through the blood and seed such a valve, cause bacterial endocarditis. To prevent this, antibiotics are prescribed for these folks before cleaning.
