Food,H2O precautions: Travelers diarrhea is due to bacteria in water, uncooked foods, salads & fruits in developing countries; avoiding these will reduce the risk. Prescription medications for short term travelers may minimize diarrhea in certain circumstances. Prescriptions for self treament are sometimes given. Always get pre-travel advise, medications and vaccines from your pcp or infectious disease md.

Prevention: With good hand washing , avoiding raw foods, undercooked meat, and eating from street vendors. After that bismuth subsalicylate ( 2 tablets 4 times a day). Use of bismuth subsalicylate should be avoided by persons who are allergic to aspirin, during pregnancy, and by persons on certain medications, like warfarin. Routine Prophylactic antibiotics are not recommended.
