Strait across: With the caveat this is not always possible if one has ingrown toenails.

Straight across: Toenails should be trimmed straight across. Don't try to cut them short, trim the nails and use an emery board to file and shape the nail afterwards. Improper trimming can lead to ingrown toenails and injury to the nail bed and tip of the toe.
