See answer : Swelling of hands and cheeks (and likely feet as well) are signs of fluid retention (edema). Too much salt, kidney disease, congestive heart failure all common causes. May also contribute to voiding problems at night. Most common cause of incontinence at age 84 is overactive bladder. Stress and overflow incontinence other causes. Stroke can aggravate. Can only make accurate diagnosis by testing.

Edema: At that age and after a stroke there are several possibilities. Is possible that she can be in cardiac failure and retaining fluid causing the edema. Also possibility of chronic renal disease causing fluid retention. After a stroke you can develop a neurogenic bladder preventing normal emptying of the bladder.. She could have urge incontinence or overflow incontinence. She needs to see a specialis.
