Depends: On how severe your diabetes is. If you have type 1 diabetes, you need Insulin and there's no 2 ways about it. If you have type 2 and your sugars are not terribly elevated, you might be able to control this (even reverse it!) with aggressive lifestyle change - diet, exercise, weight loss. Work with a physician who you trust.

Type 1 or Type 2?: The major question is whether you are a type1 (insulin dependent) or type 2 (insulin resistant) diabetic. If you are type 2, you can control it with diet, weight loss, and exercise. If you are type 1, your body simply does not make enough insulin, and you will have no choice but to start taking insulin.
