Patience is perfect: Teaching your child to sleep does not happen overnight. Like all other developmental skills, some pick it up quick and some need a lot of practice. Start at an early age - encourage infant to learn "self-soothing". Then have a bedtime routine that you are consistent with, but don't put your child in bed asleep. They need to learn to fall asleep in their own bed environment. Be patient.
