What illnesses?: Many people are able to work steadily despite psychiatric illnesses. What are the circumstances of job loss? Layoffs? Being fired for behavioral issues? Not showing up to work? I don't know what difficulties you've had. Have you been in supportive psychotherapy all this time, and do you have a case manager (nurse or lcsw) in addition to your psychiatrist? These are places to start.

Can always ask . . .: If you think it is reasonable, you can always apply. The disability office will want medical ; psych records, a history of work, medications, etc. They may want to talk with family members. They may request an independent evaluation by a psychiatrist or a psychologist of you as part of the process. May times, first applications are denied, so you may have apply more than once.

Disability: Any condition could be or not a disability. Disability means that you cannot perform adequately in a working environment. There are multiple working choices and schedules to accommodate persons with anxiety disorders. Vocational rehabilitation and recovery programs are invested in finding a more appropriate and productive work environment when you have anxiety issues. Make a consult with them asap.
