A member asked:

Can taking lamotrigine cause low cortisol? if so, how can it be raised?

3 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

See answer : Lamotrigine: fda-approved drug for treatment of epilepsy and bipolar disorder and off-label for treatment of headaches and depression would be an extremely unlikely cause of low cortisol. Only rare reports and more likely an association rather than a cause. Important to know cause of low cortisol to correctly treat. Stress reduction, heart-healthy diet, adequate sleep, proper exercise all helpful.

No: Lamotrigine does not directly lower cortisol levels. People who take this medication for various psychiatric problems, including anxiety, will frequently have high cortisol levels related to the disorder. Lamotrigine helps bring these levels back down to normal, by improving the anxiety/depression. A single cortisol level done in someone who is not under stress does not tell you very much.

No: Lamotrigine is not associated with lower cortisol levels. However, if taking the medication reduces your chronic stress, that may help reduce stress-related mildly elevated cortisol levels back toward normal, which is desirable.
