A member asked:

If you already have hsv1 and get cold sores, does that make you immune to contracting the virus again? or can you still get it somewhere else?

Hsv1: Cold sores can be from hsv1 or hsv2. Because there is no cure for herpes, once you get the virus, you don't get the same type again. Rather you have "flare ups" where you keep having outbreaks from that initial exposure. You can still catch hsv2, but you won't get a "new" hsv 1 infection.

HSV1 may return: Hsv is a virus that may reoccur. It may recur on any mucous membrane. So, if you are having oral sex, it may recur on the genital area if you have oral sex when you have an active lesion.
