Control sugars: When blood sugar(glucose) is over 200, a lot of glucose is spilled out into the urine. This can amount to losing 500-1000 calories a day (or more in extreme cases). Keeping your sugars under 200 is important, then, in making those calories "stick" to you. Usually, muscle mass is severely decreased, so once sugars are controlled, working with weights will help rebuild the muscle tissue.
