Is there a difference between a psychologist and a clinical psychologist?

Training differences: The american psychological association accredits doctoral programs in clinical, counseling and school psychology. Traditionally, clinical psychologists are trained to be able to evaluate and treat all types of patients, even the most severe. A school psychologist is usually trained to provide psychoeducation evaluations and therapy for students(children and adolescents)but some can do alot more.

There are many: types of psychologists, school, sports, organizational, neuropsychologists to name a few. Clinical psychologists specialize in psychotherapy and psychological testing for clinical diagnostic purposes for treatment as opposed to education.

Therapy vs meds: Speaking very generally, most psychologists hold either a PhD or a PsyD degree (I hold both) and practice psychotherapy. Psychiatrists hold either an MD or a DO degree, and they prescribe psychotropic medications, and generally do not do all that much therapy these days, but years ago psychiatrists would do both. If symptoms are severe, see the psychiatrist first.
