It's too early!: Fetal heart tones with a hand-held dopler can not reliably be heard before 12 weeks. On a trans-vaginal u/s it is difficult to detect fetal heart beat before 6-8 weeks. If you're having bleeding or have a history of miscarriage, request an ultrasound. If not, don't worry and see if things aren't better at your next visit.
