Heart Beat: Yes it is normal. The aorta which is a very large artery is in that area. This is especially easy to hear if relatively thin.

Probably normal: He is probably hearing the radiation of your heart beating which is very nearby and can be easily heard in some, especially if you are lean. Unless you can feel the aorta pulsating in the stomach or if any other symptoms, would not typically be of concern.
