It burns the mucosa: Acid reflux damages the mucosa but also there is a reflex bronchospasm. Chronic aspiration can cause pulmonary fibrosis (as one of the contributing theories/factors) even cause bronchiectasis or rupture of lung tissue. Barium swallow or direct visualization are few of the tests.
