Common: It's common to have recurrent utis in elderly women, and there are many causes (don't lose hope!): incontinence, diarrhea, poor hygiene (all leading to reinfection); inappropriate treatment (wrong antibiotics, fistula/uterine infection) are common. Every urinalysis should have a urine culture done, to check for resistant bacteria. Check w doctor, and strongly consider urology consult.

Has Mom had workup?: Your mom may not empty bladder with voiding, can be checked with post void ultrasound scan. Hospital & some nursing homes have bladder scanners. She may have an infected bladder or kidney stone which could continue to seed utis. Also consider discussing advisability of long-term antibiotic prophylaxis, with her dr., to prevent utis.
