Umbilical hernia: It may or may not hurt. Some umbilical hernias bulge out but cause little or no pain. Others can be very painful. Everyone is different.

Maybe: Pain from hernias are frequently described as "discomfort" or an "achy" feeling. I have heard the bruise analogy from patients as well. If you have a hernia, consider a consult with a general surgeon. If you're not sure, see your primary care provider. Timing of appointment depends on severity of symptoms. Hope this helps!
