Is it normal to suddenly get bruising a few weeks post umbilical hernia operation ?

No : Please call your surgeons office immediately and schedule an evaluation. If there is a large swelling or if you feel lightheaded, weak, or if your heart rate is elevated there could potentially be postoperative bleeding and in that case if suspected you need emergency evaluation asap.
