Full thickness burn: A third degree burn is one that includes all layers of the epi & dermis. The trouble? Healing. 3rd degree burns heal poorly owing to the fact that the areas which give rise to new cells are injured. 3rd degree burns heal with contractures, are prone to become infected, and often need to be excised (cut out) with skin grafts placed to allow healing.
