How can dentists fix cross bites with braces?

2 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

What kind?: Dental crossbites can be fixed by moving teeth, often with braces, wires, and elastics. Skeletal crossbites (difference in jaw width) requires an expansion appliance in children, and an expansion appliance coupled with jaw releasing surgery in adults. Please consult with a specialist, a qualified orthodontist, to evaluate your problem and appropriate treatment.

Depends: crossbites can be in front or in back. back crossbites are treated with expanders when severe, or wires and brackets and elastics when not. Although use of expander is technically allowed in young teens, not adults. in adults, prior to expansion in severe cases, jaw surgery might be required. Front crossbites can be fixed braces and elastics, extractions or surgery.
