Can you explain to me why crushing injury to the occipital bone is often fatal?

Dr. Joseph Pfeifer answered

Specializes in Trauma Surgery

Sensitive are: The occipital bone houses the exit of the medulla, which controls functions like breathing & hear rate. It also protects the cerebellum, which coordinates motor function, as well as the visual cortex.. Hemorrhage or crush in these area has a high chance of causing major, irreversible brain injury. They are tight spaces in the brain and do not tolerate swelling/injury etc.
