Anticholinesterase: neostigmine inhibits the activity of the enzyme responsible for breaking down the acetylcholine, the ubiquitous neurotranmitter. In anesthesia it is commonly used to reverse action of curare-like medications that cause muscle relaxation/ temporary paralysis necessary to facilitate surgery. Hope that helps
