Trauma to muscle: The iris is in part a muscle which opens and closes the pupil. Trauma can sometimes so damage the muscle that is ceases to function and usually this causes dilation. We give such eyes 1/2 to 1 year to fully recover. After that time, it usually is permanent. Improvement is possible with color contact lenses and a surgical implant of an artificial iris.
