Why should a patient try to control coughing and gasping during thoracotomy?

?: Generally, nobody is awake during a thoracotomy. It is done under general endotracheal anesthesia with a breathing tube in place. You do not want to wake up in the middle of the case and start coughing. That is what anesthesiologists are for.
