Yes but treat cause: Expectorant or antitussives are useful to treat the symptoms but a cough productive of discolored phlegm is a sign of infection. Elderly patients often do not have fever and care must be taken not to miss an early pneumonia with productive cough when antibiotic treatment may be needed. Care must be taken to evaluate the patient's underlying condition/age and bronchial medications for cough.

Not always...: Sometimes, a cough should not be suppressed especially if there is thought to be infection present. If you are unsure how to treat a particular cough, see your doctor for evaluation.
