Depends: Generally, recovery is 6wks to 3 months. This will really depend on numerous things. There are different types of thoracotomies and pain reducing approaches. Muscle sparing, nerve sparing, rib sparing techniques will likely reduce pain and improve recovery. Use of an epidural in appropriate candidates also helps in early post-operative recovery.
