Can genital herpes be passed at birth to a baby?

Yes: If there is active shedding of the virus in the vaginal area then infection can be transmitted during delivery. However, washing of the baby immediately after delivery can help reduce the risks.

Yes: The greatest risk is for babies born during an initial outbreak, with as many as 30% acquiring a serious infection.(deadly) If identified in early labor, c-section delivery can avoid passing the illness. In women with recurrent outbreaks, active or inactive, about 4% of newborns will pick up the disease during vaginal delivery.
