Yes: Your spinal cord is essential for normal function and movement of everything below the level of compression. If your cord is being compressed, and a neurosurgeon is recommending a surgical decompression, listen well. Okay to ask questions, particularly about risk and benefit and have family present. Be well.

Most would say yes: If there is injury to the cord, it is symptomatic and it is compressed the usual standard of care/ accepted way to decompress is surgery. Often time is of the essence. If not get a second opinion.
