Oral hygiene: Two things are necessary and best: proper tooth brushing and flossing. Toothpastes are not necessary and only helpful. Same goes in most cases for mouthwashes. There are exceptions for specific problems such as desensitizing toothpastes and antimicrobial rinses for periodontal problems.

Hmmm: You can brush with either;it is the mechanical action of the brush that removes the bacterial build up. Toothpaste will give you some Fluoride and has a mild abrasive to help remove stain. Mouthwash will 'freshen' your breath better but has no Fluoride or abrasive.
