A member asked:

If an abnormal skin formation is removed, how soon the histology examination must be doneafter so that the results are still considered reliable?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Skin biopsy handling: The handling of the skin removed is very important. It must be promptly placed in formalin or some other preservative (a process called "fixing"), to prevent the rapid necrosis (destruction) of the cells. How long is a good question, but cell destruction and changes begin within a few min. I believe that the answer depends upon the tissue, size, dx. Perhaps a pathologist could weigh in on this?
