Cholinesterase inhibitors(donepizil, galantamine, (galantamine hydrobromide) rivastigmine) help boost the level of acetylcholine in the neuronal cleft- this chemical is known to be important for memory and learning. Nmda antagonist memantine helps the neuron to fire more normally and may have a protective effect as well. They are often used together.
