How long does a hydrocodone pain killer relieve pain?

3-4 hours: Hydrocodone is relatively short acting, and with severe pain it may be as short as 2-3 hours. Doctors often prescribe it for every 6-8 hours, but it almost never lasts that long, although the tylenol (acetaminophen) in it might.
