Exam, observation: Watch your thumb, see if it havs full motion in all planes , if not there are special tests to isolate specific tendons. There are longer tendons that begin in the forearm and movement of the wrist creates tenodesis motion, solated extension of the thumb off a table, independent ip joint motion, lag in motion etc...See a hand surgeon ...They know all this.
