Herpes: Herpes oticus, also called ramsay hunt syndrome (an old term), is a infection of the facial nerve by the chicken pox virus, herpes zoster. It is painful. Bell's palsy is a dysfunction of the facial nerve of unknown cause. There is typically no pain with a bell's palsy.
