Pharyngitis/tonsils: While most cases of acute pharyngitis are simple viral infections which resolve on their own, there are other considerations which include strep infection, mononucleosis, and tonsillitis. He needs a throat swab. Untreated strep, in particular, can lead to abscess, rheumatic fever, and glomerulonephritis. A simple throat swab will resolve this question.
