Is it good to ice directly following a severe sprained ankle?

Yes: Ice helps to control and reduce inflammation. Never place ice directly on skin as you could develop frostbite, place a cloth between skin ; ice pack. Also consider wrapping it with ace bandage ; taking nsaid's such as advil or aleve (naproxen). But-make certain it is only a sprain and not a fracture by seeing a physician for evaluation.

RICE: RICE is commonly employed: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Apply ice only 10-15 min/hour and not directly to skin. An ACE bandage may help with swelling, but provides zero support to the ankle. Only an xray can disprove a broken bone. Sincerely, Dr. Latva
