Not for long.: Not for long unless only a small area is missing. Dura can also be replaced surgically. The dura is needed to protect the nervous system from infections, inflammation, and contain the cerebrospinal fluid. The dura also has a role in the brain being able to auto-regulate its own pressure and blood flow. Without these features, one would not live more than 1-2 weeks if there were a large defect
