Hemoglobin mutations: Sickle cell anemia is caused by a mutation beta-hemoglobin. In sickle cell anemia, the abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid, sticky and misshapen. This can lead to a whole host of problems, including anemia. Sickle trait is one copy of hemoglobin carries the mutation for sickle cell disease and the other copy is unaffected. Most people with sickle trait are unaffected by this.
