Toipcal anesthesia: Lido gel is for situations where you wan some topical analgesia quickly in areas you cannot inject in or be in appropriate to inject. A common case is placing a nasal tube, the tube is dry and sliding it through the nasal passages down the esophagus would hurt. Placing some lido gel on it not only makes it glide but somewhat numbs the membranes.
