Dental assistant: A dental hygienist must complete 2 years of training and receive a degree at a recognized dental hygiene school, which is often associated with a dental school. A dental assistant is not required to have training through a school or college, although it is recommended. Some dentists can train the assistant on their own, assuming they have time in a busy day. Continuing ed is a must for both.

Hygienist : A dental hygienist has been highly trained and is licensed to clean teeth, treat and prevent gum and periodontal disease, and teaching patients how to maintain healthy mouths. A dental assistant works directly with the dentist during patient procedures like a nurse during surgery. Training is less vigorous.. Some states require licenses. Both are important to patient care.
