Brief version: A great deal happens: injuries can include hypoxic injury to the brain, direct carotid arterial injury, and injury to the spinal cord / neck vertebrae. Said differently, the structures of the neck can be directly injured leading to paralysis and even brain damage from lack of oxygen to the brain.
