Varies: It can take minutes or years. How do you know you have this hernia? If you are having problems you need to be seen asap by your doctor. Strangulation of the stomach can be fatal if not attended to quickly.

Suddenly: Strangulation of the stomach occurs as an acute event - sudden indent of pain, progressive, often associated with inability to swallow and wretching. It is very uncommon, but also unpredictable. See a general or thoracic surgeon with experience in laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair for a consultation.
