The AAP revised the: definition of Pediatric Undernutrition, or having a BMI < 5th %ile, in 2013 as "an imbalance between nutrient requirements & intake that results in cumulative deficits of energy, protein or micronutrients that may negatively affect growth, development & other relevant outcomes." See Dr. Daniel Kessler's book " Pediatric Undernutrition" & http://m.aapnews.aappublications.org/content/34/6/15.full.

Needs?: There are many sites that have reliable information: mayoclinic.Com, hopkinschildrens.Org, healthychildren.Org, and kidshealth.Org. If your child has failure to thrive, a thorough history (illnesses, family history, food diary, etc) should be done with a complete physical and possibly labs and other testing. Many causes: poor nutrition, genetic / hormones, reflux, illness, heart/lung probs, etc.
