Lymph nodes: Lymph nodes are the local "battlefields" of the immune system. They are small nodules under the skin all over our bodies which provide a filter where bacteria and virus meet the immune system and can be dealt with more effectively. When you have an infection of any sort, the lymph nodes nearest the area get tender and swollen. There are sets behind the ear and behind the neck. See an md to be sure.
