Depends: The purpose of lumineers is to make a smile look better or perfect. If your teeth are extremely crooked, then either they need to be orthodontically moved or may need to be adjusted (trimmed) so the lumineers will look better. If you will accept a less than ideal final result, then possibly you may not need tooth movement or adjustment. Talk to your dentist.

Talk with dentist: Lumineers are a type of porcelain veneer and some slight irregularities in tooth positions can be overcome with veneers. However, sometimes the postions of the teeth is not correctable with veneers alone. Talk with your dentist about your concerns.

That is best...: To answer your question, no, your teeth do not have to be straight. The dangers or failures of lumineers or any porcelain veneer occurs when too much is attempted to be corrected with solely veneers. A reputable dentist who puts the patient's needs first will be able to determine best if orthodontics is recommended first. I always consider orthodontic options first to see if they are indeed needed

Lumineers: Lumineers are a brand name of a porcelain veneer and definately not the only product that can be used to give you the smile you are looking for. There are limits as to how much teeth can be straightened with veneers alone, other options may be better. See a dentist for a cosmetic evaluation and find out what your options are.

See an orthodontist: If your teeth are discolored or chipped, or moderately crooked, Lumineers is likely a perfect solution for you. Lumineers provide a painless, fast alternative to braces that offers a perfectly-aligned look along with a beautiful smile. In many cases combination orthodontics and Lumineers is the best solution. See your orthodontist first.
