Prevention: Mainly to asses for any underlying issues (heart disease, arrhythmia, diabetes, etc) that may affect your response to exercise. Also some medicines may change your response to exercise or the types of exercises that are safe.

Your Safety: This is so if you have any medical problems, they can be addressed prior to causing a potential problem. For example: you could have risk factors for heart disease and therefore could have undiagnosed heart artery blockages. Exercising is like a stress test but under uncontrolled conditions. This could lead to chest pain, arrythmia, heart attack. This is bad. So, see your doctor first.
