A member asked:

I read the average test window for for when 'most' hiv infected people test positive is 2-8 weeks after exposure. is that true?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Actual numbers vary: Time of exposure to earliest symptoms of viral infection- several days to several weeks (incubation period). Ttime of exposure to time of antibody detection- 2 wks- 6 months (window or seroconversion period). During this time a patient is contagious to others. In people who are suspected having been exposed but are negative to testing we recommend repeat testing at 6, 12, and 24 wks.
