Nerve Compression: Hands going numb is a common complaint. It is often caused by positioning of the arms, hand, or elbow that puts pressure on a nerve. The pressure can also come from the neck. Median nerve compression at the wrist, or carpal tunnel syndrome, is the most common. Night splints, vitamin b6, and local steroid injection can help. See your physician for and exam and proper diagnosis.

CTS: Most common etiology for your complaint would be carpal tunnel syndrome particularly if it awakens you at night. Try a course of nighttime splinting, and see your pcp.
